Going Public.

We’re so proud of you and excited that you are taking this important step in your life! Baptism is an outward expression of an inward change. It signifies that a person is officially going public with their faith in Jesus. The symbolism of baptism is powerful. As you come out of the water, you are saying, “I identify with the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ as my own new story.” You are no longer defined by your sin, but brought to new life with Jesus, as He was resurrected into newness of life. Far from an arrival point of perfection, baptism means God is just getting started with you, and the best is yet to come!

That’s worth celebrating.

How will I be baptized?

Jesus was baptized by immersion. The word “baptize” comes from the Greek word βαπτίζω (baptizo), which means “to immerse or dip under water.” We baptize by full immersion (dunking under the water) because we believe that Jesus and the early church modeled this practice.

What should I wear?

We’ll provide you with a new Storyline t-shirt to wear in the water. Women should wear shorts and a swimsuit. Guys should wear swim trunks. Wear dark-colored shorts to maintain modesty. Please do not wear any headgear, hats, glasses or jewelry.

What should I expect?

Before the baptism, we’ll meet with you and run through some details about how we will perform the baptism. Before going into the water, we’ll join those who came to support you in your decision and briefly explain the meaning of baptism. You will be given an opportunity to share why you’ve decided to be baptized (totally optional). After that, we’ll have a special prayer and then go into the water for the baptism. After the baptism, you can leave the water, dry off, and watch the others.

What should I bring?

  • change of clothes

  • a towel

  • water shoes (if needed)

  • a plastic bag for your wet clothes

Bring a friend!

We encourage you to invite your relatives and friends to attend your baptism. It’s a beautiful, powerful picture of the gospel and Christ’s love, and it’s worth celebrating with the important people in your life.

Where should I go for the baptism?

The baptism will be happening during the Light Bearers Convocation this Saturday at 4:30pm by the river on the Laurelwood Farms campus. We’re also having a Storyline picnic at 1:30pm and would love it if you’d join us (in the 13+ tent—look for the Storyline Church flag/signs).

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”
